A piece of illumination always begins the same way: a sketch on tracing paper in pink or red pencil. These lines are drawn and redrawn, and the design refined long before any gold is laid. This collection develops that first stage to its fullest: red pencil on a cream ground, in a single colour, with no foil and nothing to hide behind. In these cards, two traditions meet: the tezhip illumination of the Persian and Ottoman world, and the ornate lettering of the Victorian greetings card.
